I'm Italian too, though I've lived in the UK for most of my life, and I agree with everything you wrote. All my relatives are in Italy, and while I do have some sane cousins, I've been witnessing with growing horror the effect of putin's propaganda on several family members - particularly the ones who had heavily subscribed to covid conspiracy theories (as opposed to being rationally critical of the pandemic measures, which is a different thing). One of these people literally tried to convince to learn russian instead of Ukrainian!! Meanwhile, the left-wing side of my family is generally more capable of critical thinking - and also includes a Ukrainian cousin - but the older people are really suffering from being confronted with the reality of the soviet union, which they grew up idealising from afar. So it's difficult to have a reasonable conversation about Ukraine.

@NightRider2023-f1j I don't know how you can say that so confidently, considering that the Ukrainian government is not releasing the number of military casualties. However, that's not denying that there have been many losses, military and civilians, and that Ukraine is having to come to terms with having a high number of disabled people for decades to come.

@nullanonsonemmenoiocosascr6676 I've just looked this guy up and he sounds like really bad news... It's never a good thing when someone dies in prison but it's something that happens in various countries (including the UK, where I live) whether or not they are at war. He was an active putin propagandist knowingly breaking the law in his country of residence, I'm glad he was arrested. He had pushed some abhorrent views over the years, and I'm sure he had a sizeable platform. We need to do our hardest to ensure that his death is not turned into political capital by others of the same ilk - by resisting comments like the one at the top of this thread.
