Interviews from Ukraine

Comments by "1midnightfish" (@1midnightfish) on "What do Ukrainians HATE MOST About UKRAINE? Street Interviews" video.
My one Ukrainian relative, who's been living in Italy (where I was born) for the past few years, recently told me of his shock at the amount of corruption his husband came up against in the higher education system. It's bad enough over there, that a Ukrainian was impressed! Honestly, many of the answers in this video would have come up in a street interview in Italy.

No, it's not. This is free people speaking out without fear of repercussions. One of the dangers, when one is as vulnerable - and dependent on outside help - as Ukraine at the moment, is to try and project a picture of innocence and perfection, and while that's understandable, it just leads to more problems down the line. There are things, like corruption, that thrive in the dark corners we kick them into because we don't want others to see (because we're scared they'll stop helping us). I'm glad to see that Ukrainians are confident enough to name the things they're angry about and want to change (even when I disagree, as with the last guy in the video): it's a sign of a healthy society that will keep developing in a positive direction after the war is over. The amazing thing about Ukraine is that it's developing even now.

I disagree, I think it's very healthy for people to be so outspoken about this issue, which tends to thrive on silence. I grew up in Italy, my family still live there, and I hope that one day I'll see my native country tackle its own ingrained, widespread culture of corruption the way Ukraine is doing now
