I think it's quite a common misunderstanding, there are people all over the world who get that wrong. I doubt anyone is free, anywhere, regardless of their lifestyle and the political system of the country where they live. And the measure to which people can affect what actions are taken by their government varies even in countries commonly seen as bastions of democracy. But without a democratic system firmly in place, there will be no freedom for the vast majority of the population.

That's not about democracy - it's about expressing support for the country currently committing genocide in Ukraine. Of course it's illegal. And to be honest, any Ukrainian who supports russia should just pack up and move there - it's really not far, there's loads of space and they already speak the language, it would be the easiest relocation ever.

@perfectmazda3538 some russian interviewees definitely do that, some are shamelessly pro putin to the point of calling for genocide, some actually give their opinion even if it's controversial. I'm not quite sure if/why you're arguing with me on this point, since we seem to agree and my reply mentioning 1420 was nothing to do with one of your comments😂 Whatever, have a nice day

@rgbforever4561 Again: I brought up 1420 because of the initial statement I was replying to, which was "If democracy was only 50/50 you would not have the courage to conduct these interviews" (it is at the top of the thread, but at this point I despair of people's ability to scroll up and down and read through comments before replying). I used 1420 to show that some people do have the courage to conduct street interviews in a place like russia, where the balance of democracy - to borrow the language of many of these Ukrainian interviewees and picked up by the original commenter - must be hovering close to 0%. Basically, whether street interviews are conducted in any one country shouldn't be used as a measure of how democratic that country is. How people respond may be a more reliable indicator, but still anectodal. I love 1420, as I do this channel, and I do draw inferences from these interviews, but I try to keep in mind that I can only trust those inferences to a point. When 1420 interviewed people in the streets of Minsk, the tone and content of many of those interviews was strikingly different, but still ... Belarus...

@Кирилл-ж4ф3я Oh, I know the concept of genocide - maybe you need to look it up again. Then you will see that there isn't a single point of the definition of genocide that russia hasn't committed in Ukraine since February 2022. The intent to wipe out Ukraine as a sovereign country and as a nation has been made clear repeatedly by multiple russian politicians and propagandists. And the denial of genocide, in comment like yours, for example, is in itself a propaganda weapon used very intentionally to continue perpetrating genocide on the Ukrainian people.

Do you watch 1420? There are people doing street interviews in russia at the moment. That's not a measure of how democratic a country is - though I can't imagine people doing street interviews in North Korea, so there are definitely degrees of undemocracy. I admire the people in this video who answered truthfully to their opinion and experience.

Why? Corruption thrives on secrecy, especially on being an "open secret" that everyone knows and maybe even complains about, never saying or doing anything constructive, because it feels so pointless. In the open air it will eventually degrade, like a virus.
