  2.  @XRP747E  Yes. I don't have the figures to hand but there was a massive Ukrainian presence in some gulags, for decades. I've heard Timothy Snyder talk about it, and in the spring of last year I was lucky to hear Dr Oksana Kis (from Lviv University, I think) talk about her book "Survival as Victory: Ukrainian Women in the Gulag". It was a brilliant, eye-opening talk and if I weren't so pathetically skint I would buy the book. I think there's a partial version online that gives you a good idea of the content.

  3.  @dw620  Is Svalbard russian territory?? And here was me thinking it's in Norway my whole life (well - since I first found out Svalbard exists, through Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials novels, of all things). I'm embarrassed.
