@tenniswilliam The word "slave" does originate from "slav". What I profoundly object to in your comment, however, is 1) the way you casually equate russians with all slavs (way to do putin's work for him) and 2) the way you equate Africans with the Ottoman Empire. Another thing that must be pointed out is that "russians" didn't exist until the 18C when a muscovite emperor rebranded his empire as "russia" to appropriate the ancient culture associate with Kievan Rus, which had flourished on the territory of modern Ukraine and had. @wl9275 Look into it a bit more, there are many things wrong with that comment which are being pointed out by various people in this thread. If you're interested in the history of the region, Timothy Snyder's lectures from last year are all availabe on YT and worth listening to. The Making of Modern Ukraine will give you a playlist, he talks about slavery in a number of the earlier lectures
