Thank you 1420, even by your standards this is an excellent video! Those glimpses of the press and propaganda of the time are fascinating. One thing about the start of WW2 that I knew nothing about until I listened to Timothy Snyder's lectures on The Making Of Modern Ukraine is Hitler's aim in invading Poland was actually to colonise Ukraine, because of its extensive resources. Another thing I didn't know, but is apparently evident from primary sources, is that Hitler was so impressed with the Holodomor that he took it as an inspiration for the Holocaust 😨 I wonder what would happen if you asked a question about that, presenting the evidence at the same time. It probably couldn't be done safely, though, so I'll never know. The most important thing is that you guys stay safe and free and keep dodging the draft. ❤

@hardywatkins7737 Have you heard him speak about his new book? A philosophical rather than historical exploration of freedom, he's been working on it while travelling around Ukraine. I can't wait ☺

@hardywatkins7737 Thank you 😊 that's from 8 years ago and that makes it even more interesting and important now... I had a quick scroll through the comments just now and it got some positive "reviews" from Ukrainians earlier this year, I'll definitely listen in the next few days. If you listen to the lecture about freedom, let me know what you think! 💙💛

@hardywatkins7737 What was that about? Genuinely interested in what that man has to say about pretty much everything, it's always food for thought. If you just type "timothy snyder freedom" into YT a lot will come up, but the title of the one I watched recently is Timothy Snyder: Freedom as a Value and a Task - a Talk in Kyiv | UkraineWorld Podcast

@hardywatkins7737 I finally had the time to have a proper listen to the lecture you recommended... I'm going to recommend it to everyone I talk to about Ukraine from now on. Listening in 2023 is both chilling and illuminating, horrifying and empowering. The way he explains all the "big words" he uses and makes relatable analogies and examples makes this lecture accessible to most people, and his words are as relevant now as they were then, if not more.

@hardywatkins7737 Thanks, I have watched a few of his videos (there's just so much important content and so many hours in the day!) but I hadn't noticed that one. I've heard Snyder say similar things with regards to the russia obsession with Crimea. It's interesting how, if you scratch away at russian supremacy, you'll just find a pathetic, provincial culture that never really developed because it was too busy trying to emulate other cultures, while pretending it wasn't... like the school bully "stealing" dance moves from the other kids, then telling everyone who'll listen that they stole those moves from him
