Thank you. I thought about his English the whole time I was watching the video... I've lived in London most of my life, sometimes teaching English to refugees from different parts of the world, and when I was younger I lived in a hostel with many young refugees from different East African countries. Obviously people have different levels of education and many Somalis do speak very good English, but something about the way he speaks doesn't quite ring true, even to my European ear. Have you thought of emailing the channel directly to let them know?

@jewishnationalist For all we know, this guy is an experienced mercenary and this is his cover story. Lying about his nationality would make it even harder for Ukrainian authorities to double-check.

If russia is a "dictatorship garage", trump was the annoying teen who hangs around just to watch and comment - and now he thinks he knows how to do it and is setting up his own garage in the middle of the town square.

So good to know there is love for Ukraine in Somalia ☺ So many people saying the same things about this guy, I hope some of you email the channel directly with your insights

@jensnimike176 From what he was saying, it sounds like he doesn't want to... But since the family situation is probably all part of his cover story, of course he doesn't want to call them

No one is saying they're saints. We're just saying they're not Nazis. Because they aren't.

THANK YOU please keep having this conversation with anyone who'll sit still long enough... there are people who will only listen to someone like you!

@gazette5583 I doubt he's getting starved the way Ukrainians POWs are getting starved in russia. There's footage of returning russian POWs complaining about how they were starved in captivity, while looking a picture of health

Thanks Kyiv Post, this was worth watching and obviously anyone who stands between putin and Ukraine - or even tries to - has my consideration and respect. But I strongly disagree with the "genocide of Slavic people" point that was made in this video: I don't have the figures at hand, but we all know that a dispoportionate number of russian soldiers who are fighting, killing and being maimed and killed in Ukraine are not in fact Slavic people, because they belong to colonised nations in the east of the so-called country currently known as the russian federation. It's also worth noting that there are ethnic russian men who choose to fight putin in the Siberian Battalion, because they strongly disagree with the undeniable white supremacist background of some prominent guys in RDK.

@tomk3732 You have just made one of the most stupid statements I have ever read on the internet. Have Azov built extermination camps for millions of people? Or even ever advocated doing that? Do you ever think before you type and click "reply"?

@sad0mar101 Thank you! I feel the same about you! You have all my best wishes

@ademirrodriguez4209 Who told you that people who post on YouTube aren't also doing a bunch of other to support Ukraine prevail over the demented mob boss that pays your wages?

@am.b5688 Maybe they're not obscuring his accent. Maybe he's just not what he says he is...? For all we know, he could be an experienced mercenary and this is his cover story.

@basroos_snafu I too would feel differently about a swastika (itself derived from an ancient symbol, it has to be said), however I give the "New Idea" theory the benefit of the doubt because since I started learning Ukrainian I've noticed how speakers of Slavic languages will use Latin script to give certain things prominence, whether in slogans, band names, or acronyms - basically it's used in branding, in the broadest possible sense, which would include a symbol like the one we're discussing. Though I also agree with you that adopting that symbol could also have been a way of trolling russia - I think both these elements are at play on the symbol. I look forward to a more transparent, deeper analysis of this in future - I'm sure it will come.

@basroos_snafu Героям слава! 💙💛 I keep hoping that no one will relax until sanity and prosperity have spread all over our planet ☺

@basroos_snafu Interesting theory. I'm still mystified by the letter Z as an orc symbol: when did it start? WHY did it start?? I feel I really should know, but I have no idea

@basroos_snafu You're right! Thanks for the conversation 🙂

Thank you @sad0mar101 Not least for thinking I'm Ukrainian, it's a great compliment 😊 I do have some links with Ukraine and I'm learning the language. I care about that country deeply, but I also have no doubt that this already messed-up world will become much, much worse if russia succeeds in this genocide (besides, no genocide can ever make the world a better place). Pro-putin propaganda has made much of African countries siding with russia "against the West" so it's wonderful to hear from people like yourself and other commenters here, who recognise this as a colonial war. Respect!

@sad0mar101 I wear badges of both the Ukrainian and Palestinian flags whenever I go out. I want people to keep seeing them both and to see them next to each other, to make exactly the point you're making

I hope you have emailed the channel to offer your insights on this man. It's more likely than he himself would be lying about his nationality, as part of his cover story. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the video about their inability to verify what he said.
1
To make his cover story hard to check...?
1
"russia is a dictatorship garage"... I want to laugh and cry and bang my head against the wall at the same time. At least there's laughter in there - thank you for that.
1
There is a disclaimer at the beginning to the video about not being able to verify his story... these are his lies, not the channel's
1
@aj.-3737 Also known as "information". It's just information that hasn't been shaped by russian propaganda - and for some people, russian propaganda filters pretty much everything so when they see or hear something untouched by it, they are primed to reject it
1
@hashimsabul2880 Why do you think this channel must be interested in getting propaganda across, rather than information? In this case, information about who from outside the russian federation is fighting for putin in this war. There is a disclaimer at the beginning about the inability to fact check this man's answers. I agree with you and all the others saying this is not a Somali man, and I hope at least some people will have contacted the channel about it. In fact, what I hope will happen / is happening, is that Ukrainian sources who interview POWs will build contacts with reliable people from the various regions that the kremlin is now recruiting from, to fact-check as they interpret.

The concentration of foolishness in your comment is just astounding
1
@azizabdiwali3364 I agree. Thank you for your insight. Have you thought of emailing the channel directly?
1
@azizabdiwali3364 Thanks, that's good to know. I tend to follow BBC stories related to the war in Ukraine but I must have missed this one... best not post links on YT but if you post the title I would appreciate it.

This war has never been a civil war. Just calling it that amounts to spreading russian propaganda

My understanding is that the latin alphabet "N" encoded in their emblem (which is not a nazi wolf's angel, as it's inverted) stands for "new" in New Idea. Azov has a comprehensive and decently written wikipedia page (in English) that is a good starting point for people wanting to find out more. I'm grateful for this video but disappointed that they didn't talk about Azov's founder Biletsky - who is now a commander after failing as a far-right politician (in Ukraine, far-right politicians fail - that's something we should never tire of pointing out!): he has most certainly made white supremacist statements in the past, and frequent homophobic statements even more recently. Personally, as long as he does his job well and doesn't stir hatred, I don't mind him being there, and he does fulfill a very different role to the one of "founding father" and mouthpiece of Azov; but I believe that propaganda is best tackled head on, by unpicking the true details that it spins into poisonous fables.

@daveliggett1328 Same here, I noticed that and immediately thought he must speak some russian. I think he's lying through his teeth. The upside of that, is that there's probably no sad little girl missing her dad
1
@am.b5688 He probably lied about it himself, as part of his cover story
1
@am.b5688 You seem to think that Ukrainians themselves are choosing to lie about this man's nationality... it makes much more sense that he would be lying about it himself, as part of his cover story.
