Are / were small children ever referred to as "puppies"? That's kind of what I've always thought "hushpuppy" meant originally: a small and tasty fried treat to keep hungry children quiet. I'm not American though, so this may be miles off 😊

@JazzyJizzyJohnson-og5sc I can imagine thinking that hot pepper might put hunting dogs off their scent, particularly in desperate circumstances and with limited resources (after all, I sprinkled peppermint oil around the garden to put off a very territorial - and noisy! - dogfox). Going through a body of water is something I've heard so much from so many sources I almost can't believe it's not true... does it just act as a physical barrier, rather than disrupt the scent trail?
