Today 14.02.2024, as a result of an attack by Ukrainian sea drones in the area of Alupka off the southern coast of Crimea, the BDC "Caesar Kunnikov" was sunk.
The ship had 89 crew members on board.
"Caesar Kunnikov" is one of seven BDCs that were part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. It was first attacked by the AFU in the port of Berdyansk, which came under missile fire a month after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The vessel was damaged then but was repaired.
Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia had formed a grouping of the Navy's landing forces in the Black Sea consisting of 13 BDCs. In addition to the seven ships of the Black Sea Fleet, it included the Northern and Baltic Fleet's BDCs. So far, the AFU has put five such ships out of action. In addition to the Caesar Kunikov, the Novocherkassk, Saratov, Olenegorsk Miner and Minsk were sunk and damaged.
In all, in the two years of the war, Russia lost more than 20 ships, including landing craft, a submarine, and the flagship cruiser Moskva. This follows Oryx calculations based on public data. Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia's fleet in the Black Sea numbered more than 70 ships.
Before that, the Black Sea Fleet's last major loss was the Russian missile boat Ivanovets. Fighters of the Ukrainian special unit "Group 13" blew it up on the night between 31 January and 1 February, killing 40 crew members.
