  48. Here's why Putin babies the Chechens - he launched his entire Presidential career by bringing the Chechens to heal. He has based his whole tough guy image on this. Of course, he did not really defeat them - he bribed the toughest warlord (Kadyrov's daddy) to give Putin his absolute loyalty. And the bribes continue. About 80% of Chechnya's economy consists of grants from Russia, and Kadyrov has Putin's permission to run Chechnya as his personal fiefdom. In exchange, not only does Kadyrov pay obeissance to Putin, but he helps intimidate any anti-Putin forces, including terrorizing unarmed people in 'temporarily' pacified parts of Ukraine. Putin is not going to do anything to make Kadyrov turn on him, such as run up large Kadyrovite casualties, and Kadyrov in turn does not want large casualties that might turn the Chechens against him.

  99. I have never been in the military, and never played a sport in my life. I did take PE in the 7th grade, and there's no way we could get away with those pushups. We were expected to do 30 to 40 REAL ones. The skinniest of us, the fattest of us, didn't matter. If you couldn't do this, it just indicated that you needed a lot more PE. They went a bit easier on the girls, but even they were expected to do a lot better than Kadyrov was doing.

There was some sort of argument with the Dagestanis, somebody got stabbed, and they began firing grenade launchers at each other. Apparently the Dagestanis won. 20 dead and 40 wounded. The Chechen commander was sent to the front line as punishment. I don't know if the propagandists finished filming or not.

I'm sure Jake will discuss this next: July 18 (Reuters) - Russia's parliament on Tuesday extended the maximum age at which men can be mobilised to serve in the army by at least five years - in the case of the highest-ranking officers, up to the age of 70. Last September, Russia announced its first mobilisation since World War Two, calling up more than 300,000 former soldiers in an often-chaotic emergency draft to support its war in Ukraine, a campaign that has been much longer and more attritional than Moscow had expected, and shows no sign of ending. It is already raising the upper age limit for men to be called up for compulsory military service to 30 from 27, and has made it much harder for young men to avoid the draft by dodging recruiters handing out call-up papers.
