@hueyiroquois3839 to be fair, it's estimated Mao starved to death 60 million of his own people during the Great Leap Forward, where he famously said, "Starve half so the other half can half full bellies". It was called the Great Famine of 1959-1962.
A well respected journalist in the Communist Party, Yang Jishen (if I remember correctly), was given unofficial access to the secret records taken during the time. He eventually wrote a book, "Tombstone" mostly detailing the records from each province that included locations, death counts, dates, and overall conditions and experiences.
He knew he would be punished by the government of China when publishing it internationally, but he decided to honor the memory of his father that had died in his presence from malnutrition when he was a young boy at the time. Obviously, the book is still banned in China today and he still lives under house arrest in China decades later.
