  1. Darius' army was generally ill-trained and poorly-equipped compared to the Macedonians. Quality vs. Quantity. Add to the fact that Alexander came to the battle bearing the reputation of being "unbeatable" plus Darius' disgraceful act of deserting his men at the slightest hint of danger to his personal safety, was the final nail that lost them their advantage of superior numbers.
