  2. China did not force Sri Lanka to accept the loans. It was offered, and it was accepted. The loan was used to build the port. It was SL's idea. As the lender, China expected that they will be repaid back. All the terms and conditions had been spelled in a contract. Since SL was unable to pay, China felt justified to take the port (built with the money they loaned to SL) under a lease arrangement where China gets free use of the port for 99 years, after which it will be turned over to SL. Simple as that. Same thing when you ask a bank to finance a car for your own use. You're driving the car but the bank holds the deed until you have paid the amortization fully. If you can't pay, then the bank declares you in breach of contract and gets to repossess the car.
