  2. To elaborate, mimicking practices are how memes, as cultural units, are spread, and how certain things become habitualized and normalized. However, mimicry is never identical, so there would be gradual changes over time to practices, due to errors in memory and reproduction. This accounts for the gradual changes in cultures. It still doesn't quite explain the punctuated changes though, the acts of revolt and anti-mimetic stuff that is novel and an example of ingenuity. Maybe that can simply be seen as a revolt, or maybe even something dialectical
