And the 55% poverty stat isn’t crazy. When he took office poverty was already around 45-50%, and the government was suppressing poverty through unsustainable price and currency controls It was going to get worse no matter what he did

How I read it, dollarisation wasn’t proposed because it is better than the peso, but because it prevents future governments from manipulating the currency like they have done for decades.

The currency was held at an artificial peg far above it's market value. He's not devaluing the currency, he's devaluing the peg.

Poverty rate was 45-50% when he took office, and trending upwards. It was inevitable

On economic policy he’s probably the best world leader at the moment. More countries could do with a Milei

We need some regulations, but undoubtedly the number that we have in the west are far too great and it is stifling economic growth.

Foreigners bring in expertise and capital that South America sorely needs. Cutting off the globe isn’t going to make you rich 😂

Good 😊

Below the level when he took office?

Pretty much all of South America are mismanaged dysfunctional welfare states, it’s much less weirder than it seems

@salsa564 China started developing when it ditched its socialism. In many ways China has fostered a stronger capitalist market than the US, with lax regulations allowing for massive competition you don’t see in the US.
1
That’s what the US needs to copy, it needs a system that allows for competition and innovation. A giant bureaucratic government won’t do that

Trump’s economic policy couldn’t get much more removed from Milei’s.

Though with Elon in his ear we’ve seen a significant shift in policies. DOGE is certainly interesting

@SusCalvin there are very few people better suited to run a task force to make the US government more efficient than Elon. All of his companies are insanely efficient, Tesla is the only EV company turning a profit, and they have higher margins than most ICE companies. SpaceX does things so much cheaper than its competitors, they’re looking to pull out of the industry altogether.

It’s really a UK centric thing. Many other countries have gone through austerity without long term pain, like the US, Australia, NZ.

@tite93 Argentina doesn't have the luxury to gradually reform into a open market. Before the 2023 election, CDOs were pricing in a 90% chance of default by 2025. But also shock therapy has worked, and the form Argentina's going through right now is quite modest. It's not like Russia converting from communism to capitalism in a couple years. Argentina is a capitalist country already. I think good examples are Poland or Chile

@tite93 poverty was already around 45% before he took office, and was being suppressed by unsustainable price and currency controls. High levels of poverty were inevitable.

No, Milei's movement has been around for years. But like in Syria, things look like they aren't moving, then all of a sudden a government is toppled
