Bingo! It’s almost as if the founding fathers despised democracy and the mob rule that comes with it and sought to make the system more fair so that smaller states don’t feel left out of the equation.

I don’t live in the US, I live in Australia. My state has had its GST taxes stolen and sent to the more populous cities, while we see messily returns of 10%, other states are seeing huge returns of 200-300% of their total GST output. If it wasn’t for our debate, which is equal to every state, I highly doubt that we would have seen the changes that we are seeing today (the federal government finally being fair). So what does this have to do the the IS and it’s Electoral College? Because it shows you how important it is to have smaller states get a small leg up. For the sake of all citizens.

Essentially, Hillary lost a lot of states. The “blue wall” was destroyed, as tromp took Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. He also took Florida and Arizona, giving him to win with over 300 electoral votes. Sure, she got a lot of votes - but that was mostly California. California had a difference of 4 million (to Hillary), yet nationally she only had 3 million more votes. It really goes to show how powerful California would be if the electoral college wasn’t around

That’s fair.

Then the smaller states get too much power, their needs to be balance

@juliahartshorn2473 personally I like the electoral college, the founding fathers feared a mob rule, and wanted to satisfy small states so that they do t feel left out by a popular voting system. Those 2 values still hold today, and with the urbanisation of much of the population- even more so. I believe in a smaller federal government. It’s shown tune and again that it doesn’t truely represent enough of the country, most elections have around half of the population against the winner. States don’t have that divide, they are more personal - that’s why the states should be more powerful.

@PROJECTxIC4RUS and swings states don’t change?
1
@PROJECTxIC4RUS heck, Texas was a swing state (according to the MSM). They change, alot
1
@PROJECTxIC4RUS trump won states in 2016 that had been democrat for many decades. Its a sign that states do change
1
@PROJECTxIC4RUS or you can do what Nebraska does
1
@PROJECTxIC4RUS the presidential election cannot be gerrymandered in every state except Nebraska and Maine. The WTA system prevents that
1
Congressmen + Senators = Electors Is that too complex for you?
1
So it can be gerrymandered?
1
Explain to me how it doesn’t protect small states? Wyoming wouldn’t even get 1 vote if it was done on a per capita basis, but they get 3 votes.
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 again, how does it not protect small states?
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 the people in big states getting all the say would lead to mob rule.
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 why should people in California control everything people in snakier states do?
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 they would.
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 they do actually. Every state is run different differently, with differing cost of living, major industries, ect. Places like New York City do not understand or even feel the effects of the laws put on say middle America. I’m a strong advocate for states having more responsibility. Why? Well it gives the people in that state more of a say over how they are governed, and will encourage a sort of “competition” between states. Let’s say California real eases a M4A plan, other states would need to improve their systems as well to keep up. As we have it now, nothing really happens. People who want Medicare for All don’t get it, people who want a free market system don’t get one, it’s not working for anyone.
1
@obiwansherlockclousseau5107 keep on dreaming
1
We have this debate about Medicare for all, and ACA. The divide is so great around the country - why not leave that power to the states. Californians can do their own healthcare plan, and Texans their own healthcare plan.

The electoral college isn’t the problem. Giving a small boost to smaller states is important so that they don’t get stepped on. But we could do with a change in how we vote for these electors, like a proportional voting system?
