😂 The 2 astronauts who have to stay behind on Orion will be a big jealous

If anyone is going to land something on the moon, it’ll be SpaceX who regularly lands rockets on Earth.

The truth is you need refuelling to get anything larger than the Apollo lander to the moon.

@ifldiscovery8500 the goal isn’t just to beat China to the South Pole, it’s about building a permanent human presence there.

@ifldiscovery8500 Artemis isn’t just to beat China. It’s to put a human presence there by making moon missions sustainable. One of the problems with Apollo, and why it was ultimately cut, was it cost like $20 billion to put 2 astronauts on the moon for a day. The goal with Artemis is to bring that cost down, increase the number of astronauts to 6 and increase the length of a mission to a month.

@ifldiscovery8500 the original Apollo lander isn’t suited for this goal. - It has a very small payload, meaning you’d need to drop most things separately which just means more launches - It could only carry 2 astronauts and couldn’t support them for very long - It wasn’t reusable or commercially viable. Both of those are important for bringing the cost down - It left most of itself behind, which just litters the surface with landers making harder for new things to land. This is especially important for a moon base, with a landing pad

Rovers are slow. And also the goal is to prepare for a settlement on Mars. Humans are part of the experiment. We need to learn what challenges they will face, learn how to sustain a colony on another body, how to mitigate health impacts, etc.

Orion won’t have an Apollo 13 moment, that’s the goal. It’ll be a far more reliable capsule than Apollo

lol what

Officially the rover will be going down in 2030 with Artemis 5. There are 3 companies in the running which started development last year. However, Astrolab had already been working on their rover years before will be sending their rover with Artemis 3.

You mean like he’s doing with Tesla, Neuralink, StarLink, etc
1
That’s because most of the things launched are short. There isn’t able that they must have a wider base.

Heavy isn’t Human Rated.

That’s what doesn’t get talked about enough. Artemis isn’t about putting people on the moon, we’re building a freaking moon base!

Obama fixed NASA. Canceled the Constellation program and cut the Shuttle, replacing it with the Commercial Resupply and Commercial Crew programs. Both were insanely over budget
1
Or maybe building a single vehicle that can do all that and is fully reusable is cheaper. That’s really the goal. You’ll also need a large rocket than can do all that in one go to get to Mars.

@gravityawsome no, Starship doesn’t leave anything on the moon

*China Russia hasn’t been a real competitor to NASA since the start of Apollo

Because Congress forced NASA to use SLS. It does have some benefits. It is the only capsule that can take people to Lunar Orbit where the new Gateway Space Station will be. In the future that could be done by Starship, which could take people to and from Lunar orbit without refuelling - like they’re doing with dearMoon. But it’ll be a while until that capability is ready.

@ifldiscovery8500 what’s your point? I said in the future, obviously when it is capable of doing what SLS does.
