Because China is a socialist shithole

You put the hardware in now that you’ll need in 4 years time. I don’t even think it will be that long, Microsoft is really pushing for AI to be incorporated into the entire system and that’s only possible if the hardware can run it natively

I just think Metro UI looks awful. Live Tiles with Microsoft’s modern design language would probably look 10x better
1
Considering China does the same to all Western companies, what's wrong with it?
1
@chengavitch10 3 months and you decided to have another crack 😂 I can definitely say that the west is greater than China. I can protest without being scared I’m going to be run down with a tank. I can say whatever I like without fear of persecution. My media is run by individuals, not the state. I can practice my religion without being thrown in a reeducation camp. I can vote for my leader. During COVID I wasn’t welded into my home. And so on

Yeah, they’ll be useful for SoCs or mobile/laptop chips. But desktop chips don’t really need them

@noobyfromhell I like his reasoning though. Having your GPU power up for a few seconds to answer a query or edit an image isn’t going to have a big impact on battery drain or heat output. NPUs are for things that will run for long periods, or constantly. Sure they can also answer queries, but if you’re taking about a LLM, even small ones require massive brute force so you’d probably power up your GPU anyway.

Metro UI was just ugly

You care about AI and privacy but use MacOS? They’ll 100% be bringing in similar features to Recall, I mean they already are with the whole “Semantic Context” thing on iOS where they’ll read your messages, search history, etc and feed it into Siri.
1
@rns10 Apple will read your files, search history, emails, images, notifications, etc. Every time you type a word, copy text, it’ll be added. Apps will add their context as well. Yeah it won’t take pictures, and it’s opt in (recall is also opt in), who knows how long until those change?
1
@rns10 Recall is not on by default. It’s explicitly opt in
1
@rns10 you can’t delete Apple Intelligence from MacOS either.
1
@rns10 the feature being “enabled” in windows != it doing anything. It doesn’t take screenshots or anything without opting in which it will ask on install. Just like Apple Intelligence. The thing will always be sitting there, you can’t uninstall it, but it won’t do anything unless you opt in Atleast that’s what they say.
1
@rns10 and yes I watched the video when it came out. It wasn’t surprising, I think Copilot is the same.

Let’s listen to people with no experience building products for people how products should be made for people

Software will just need to be updated.
1
@maimee1 if it’s important they will. If it isn’t, well it isn’t important. Most software developed today can run on any architecture anyway.
1
As much as you can afford. AI performance improves with compute
