One strategy to minimize self sabotage is to not rely or depend on another. Why be focused on a promotion when there are so many variables that you can not control? Many if not most promotions are based on factors not related to productivity, efficiency or success. Instead nepotism, cronyism, office politics may rule the organization. Is who you know more important than your own productivity? When there are layoffs, downsizing or other changes at work, whhich employees get laid off and who remain or are promoted? Many studies show that frequently it is the most productive or valuable employee who gets laid off. Consider becoming independent by being responsible for your own success and not requiring an organization! The larger an organization, the less productive it may be. What are your specific plans if there is an unpredictable reorganization, change in the market, competition or technology? Are you able to quickly respond to these potential threats to your financial health? Do you have a "Plan B" or "Plan C"? I found that when I hire recenly fired employees they perform better. Why? I can speculate that the sycophants who remained could be more effective in the "office politics" that frequently infect organizations. One result is that productive employees are left behind, overlooked or fired.
