  1. I have worked for many organizations and learned a few lessons. An employee costs an organization about 4-5 times the total cost of employing that employee. Government organizations are slightly different in that they receive money from taxes and fees. One result is that government organizations must prove their value via statistics. Statistics can also be valuable to develop reasons to expand the organization via policies, regulations and moire laws. As an employee what can you do? Understand this and assure that you provide measurable value to your employer! If you can not prove your are valuable it is time to start looking for a different job. Organizations can control you by keeping you in debt and tying up your time so you have limited opportunities to seek alternate sources of income. Use each job as a way to learn as much as possible about how your organization works including strengths and weaknesses. When you are not working, are you spending money? I try to work as many jobs as possible. If any job fails you already have a job and you can save the money that you earn. Frugality is the rule.
