  1. I enjoyed this history. I lived in an area that had terrible telephone service. The service was so bad that the larger phone company didn't wnt to spend money upgrading it so they sold it to a small company. I had maximum speeds of 60 baud and later 75 baud. I think these were designed for Teletype only? My first home built computer was a PDP 8e ( built from used or spare parts) and I was not able to get the software I wanted so it became a very expensive TV typewriter- sometimes. The big day came when I was able to get 110 baud but the phone company reps couldn't help me with anything. The Telcos were mainly worried about kids using Blue Boxes ( in band MF tone generators) to make free long distance calls. My local Telco was still using OLD Step by Step switches. Oh what fun! Today I am using a 5G tower service which is faster and more reliable than my X brand cable service. Landline telephone? Whats that? I removed the drop from my property.
