Because he worked for the government, which is how he had the access to the information, like the Rosenbergs. None of the journalists that continue to report on the files have been arrested and imprisoned. He made made an oath, he broke it, he has to live with the consequences.

@command_unit7792 you're thinking of the old Russia, the new one spends half its time online trying to spread fake news and propaganda to disrupt democracy in the west and particularly the U.S. And let's not forget about China.

@nealbeard1 yes it is a defense. One is a war crime the other is a betrayal of your nation, making it weaker to attacks from countries like Russia and China. He acted like the Rosenbergs (the man) and he is deserving of punishment.

@NathanielEssex1849 I agree with pretty much everything you said although I think its important to note that the greatest threats to the U.S. are not lone wolves, but other great powers like Russia and China, who could strike the heart of infrastructure with cyberattacks or our troops based in allied countries with conventional weapons in a surprise attack, potentially killing millions and at least temporarily paralyzing the U.S., that is a truly existential threat and our capacity to detect an incoming attack and defend against it has been severely damaged thanks to Snowden.
