What do you think is holding the Windows kernel back the most ? is it it's need to be backward compatible ? is it C++ ? is it the architecture itself ? a mix of everything ? Also from discussion on forums with also former windows kernel dev I remember them saying that they were all very much competent people, and that the kernel was actually nice and the reason Windows itself s*cks to much is that the layer above the kernels are quite bad and that backward compatibility makes it even harder to move the needle of quality in the good direction is it true ?

@andrewadriance For sure but I assume that a good kernel provides the means for the people writing the layer above to evolve without breaking everything, or without making sacrifice, because maybe it's not a kernel related issue, but numerous time I've experience the sweet sweet blue screen on windows while I've never experienced such issues on Linux, so part of me assume that the quality of the kernel or at least the quality of the API(s) surrounding the kernel is not the same, and thus this creates instability that in turns affect me the user. But maybe this is related to another piece of the puzzle that I'm missing.

@andrewadriance that makes a lot of sense, actually, most of the drivers on linux are open source so I guess they are easier to test and thus result in less problem downstream. Ahah yeah that's a nice way to put it :)
