Believe me it's nothing like C++ template, because there is no special language in Zig comptime is just regular Zig code that just happens to run during the compilation of the program. Templates and C++ are two different languages 3 if you count macros, 4 if you count #pragmas, or 5 if you count compiler directives. I personally don't want to have 5 languages to do what comptime can do. On top of that Zig is very strictly typed, much more than C++. If somehow a type T doesn't work, believe me that I will be the first to know, because Zig simply won't compile my code. This is the opposite of C++, where sometimes the type system feels like you are writing Javascript.

@ Maybe I don't understand the complaint enough, but In Zig it's very apparent what you do, there is nothing hidden from you. Care to share an example that might highlight the problem ?

@krumbergify The difference here is operator overloading, in the C++ version don't know if a and b are scalars are if it's adding two strings, or two hashmap for all I know. In Zig at least I know this is adding Scalars or vectors. For more complex cases, You don't need anytype, and can easily use a function to validate your type, but I agree that's not necessarily solving the problem eitheir. My point is that I don't think I've ever ran into a situation where it wasn't obvious what Zig wanted/expected. In C++ on the other hand you get 500 lines of template instantiation errors, and have to investigate what is it that you messed up.

@phene-449 How's Zig a swiss army knife ? If anything Rust is the kitchen sink programming language here, not Zig, while I agree that Zig will never reach the mass adoption of Rust, it will clearly be as big as C. I work in embedded and I've been rewriting some C++ to Zig for the last 6 month at a major defense company, colleagues have a blast with the language too, productivity and morals are good, build time are cut in half, number of issues and bugs were cut significantly. We sure aren't google, but what I can tell you is that of all the developers that I work with, many of whom (myself included) used to be hardcore C/C++ developers, none of them have suggested we use Rust to rewrite anything, Zig brings some incredible value to our world.

@complexity5545 Actually I'm using it at work to rewrite some C++. I was craving for a language like Zig to be able to remove that old crappy C++ code.
