  18. To be honest in the past years I've not only been worrying about Russia but the US as well. As a Dutchman I've seen how polarised the US politics has become. Europe should be able to defend itself in the future because it looks like it won't be a certainty that the US will come to our aid if the next Russian dictator tries to make a name for himself.

  26. As a Dutchman I'll never vote for Wilders. He may have gotten the most votes but he has no majority. The Netherlands is almost always lead by a coalition and all the other parties are pro-Ukraine. As a result mr. Wilders has already made concessions in order to form a cabinet which is still ongoing. One concession is the military support for Ukraine. I think it's a smart thing of PM Rutte to have made this security agreement with Ukraine.

My country the Netherlands imports 15% of Russian gas so that doesn't seems to be a big problem. But counties like Germany and Italy are very dependable on Russian gas. So other countries will have to share their gas. That will not be enough to stop industry from taking a hit. The again in the Netherlands we were able to cut down demand by 30% simply by using energy more sensible.

It is blocking the EU aid package but maybe that can be circumvented by letting the individual members do that and compensate them afterwards? Rearming Europe is also no problem for both these countries. As a Dutchman I'm proud that my government with the PVV (Wilders) is still capable of contributing to the defense of Ukraine.

Europe is trying to import more energy from Canada and less from the U.S. The EU is investigating cloud services based in the U.S. and looking for domestic solutions. For a majority you'll need 76 seats. Wilders has 37. So yes he got a lot of votes but that doesn't mean he can make radical changes. Especially when other parties actually don't want anything to do with him. Some sort of deal will be struck in which Wilders will have to let go of most of his extreme ideas.

As a Dutchman I don't have any illusions that the US will come to out aid when Putin decides to attack NATO after the US sacrificed Ukraine. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and always saw the US as our big ally. Now I don't and I fear for the future of my children as Europe tries frantically to boost it's defense. The Dutch were never preppers but now even I am starting to prepare for the worst. I'm in a way grateful that my parents are not alive to witness the decline of western democracy and how we have forgotten what it is to fight for our freedom. A disgrace to all those heroes that gave their lives so we could have our freedom.

As a European I can tell you that despite it's errors the US as created stability in a world where non democratic forces a a big threat. Ukraine once again shows that it's important to have a powerful ally like the US. But Europe has seen that it cannot always rely on the US. A strong European military is therefore a priority. Something even a small country like the Netherlands I live in has recognized. When the US goes to war, it never is our war. When one of our NATO members is attacked, THEN it is our war.

Keep their air defense for their own protection or send a large portion of it and ammunition to Ukraine and run the risk of being run over by the Russians as Trump has said not to help Europe (even cheering for the Russians). The nummer one priority of a leader is to protect their own citizens. If the US could guarantee that it would protect Europe as it does with Israel, than Europe could send more aid to Ukraine. Unfortunately guarantees don't have the same values they used to have as Ukraine experiences at first hand.

  268. Natural gas can't be shipped easily like oil. You need pipes. Now, Germany, like many other countries in Europe, agreed on the reduction of CO2 emissions. Germany relied on coal for the production of electricity. The quick fix was to switch to natural gas and the nearest big supplier was Russia. Nuclear energy was of the table because of recent disasters in Japan. There was simply no support for that type of energy. The reason Russia is makeing so much money is because prices have tripled as world demand for natural gas has soared. Germany is building LNG terminals to cut off Russian gas, but that takes at least one year. Asia is willing to outbid anyone on the LNG market so the switch to LNG will probably be more way expensive than Russian gas at this moment. Besides, if US LNG tankers can sell their LNG at a higher prices in Asia than in Europe, then will simply sail by. So, yes Germany is doing all it can but it cannot simply turn of the gas without generation a lot of political problems. Just look at France. Elections are today and inflation is running high. Considering that and the fact that Russia backed parties like Front National in France and Forum for Democratie (who came up with that name?) here in the Netherlands are growing in popularity, you'll see the balancing act that the German goverment is facing. We all now what happened to Germany in the thirties of the last century. In hindsight every problem could have been avoided and it's very easy for the US to shout that they should simply not buy Russia gas when they themselves have all these resourses that western Europe hasn't.
