What starts out as being something of a nuisance (getting frozen in when you need to be moving) ends up as being such a beautiful experience, getting to see the goldeneye among all the other things. What we need to remember is that we are in exactly the place where we are meant to be at any time!

  12. For you there seems to be no question. You are suited to narrowboat life. You keep fit, get to view all the wildlife... Of course, there are advantages to living in a house but they are outweighed by those of living on a boat. I say - carry on doing so as long as you can!

  45. How lovely to see your video of Hebden Bridge. Back in the 60s I and my friends used to hike (and hitch-hike) around the area. From memory, Hebden Bridge was a quiet little village then. It's so sad to see Sylvia Plath's grave. A sad end for someone who had mental health issues.

  46. Thanks for a great video - as always. Regarding the deodorant - I haven't bought any for years but I bypass a lot of your steps. I simply shake a little bicarbonate of soda onto a damp cloth and apply. Works wonderfully well. The big hike in the cost of living as a continuous cruiser is going to force some people off the canals, thus reducing the income for the CRT. In turn, this will mean fewer services and care for the canals, locks and so on. Downward spiral. I really hope that pressure can be brought on the "powers that be" that make these decisions without a thought for the results to people's lives or to flora and fauna. This is one of those discussions that can go on forever!

A little later in life I rambled and hiked in Cheshire and the Peak District and remember White Nancy very well. I'm happy that your gas problem is now sorted out.

  66. Vanessa - you embody another tip and it should be your number one! That is your positive attitude and always facing things with a smile. This will get people a long way in whatever cirumstances they live! As to your children moving away, consider it a tribute to the way you have brought them up. I know from experience (both ways) that it's hard. We moved to a different country from our parents some 45 years ago; in turn a few of my children have moved to other countries. It's a lot easier to deal with it these days when there's Zoom and Facetime, etc. Good luck with everything.

  69. The peregrine falcon looks so majestic, looking down on the mere mortals below. The big freeze of 1963 changed a lot of things, personal as well as general. I was 17 years old and remember it well. Many people had falls, broken limbs, etc. and some were ill from the sheer cold. Not too many people had any form of central heating. So many things! I'm rambling. Sorry!!

I was having a conversation with some neighbours last week and we were saying that there seem to be many more birds generally than there used to be - particularly crows, who seem to have got bigger and less afraid of humans! We are also seeing different species I think. The world is a changing place!

One of my daughters spotted a Syrian woodpecker at the top of a telegraph pole near where she lives.   118. I've just come to the end of my second viewing of this! There were so many distractions (phone, doorbell, etc.) the first time that I felt I had missed a lot. The second time was much better. Wonderful to see the wildlife - especially your little owl. Then Zephyr! She's wonderful! She knows exactly what she wants and goes all out to get it! She has such an expressive face.
