  1. One of the great things about the film "The Seven Samurai" was the rigid American war time impression of the Japanese was undercut when a Samurai jokes about running away from a confrontation and his fellows laugh, probably closer to the truth during most of Japanese history..

For Kurosawa who was a war veteran and from a Samurai family depicting that sometimes the historical Samurai - Seven Samurai is historically based if not on a specific incident- would on occasion rather flee than fight ran counter to the American WWII stereotype of Japanese always fighting to the death on every occasion. I question based on your comment whether you have ever seen the film. because the incident I refer to is in it and has nothing to do with America.
