You can't stop companies to keep milking customers in every possible way , because , since late 1980's- early 1990's , system (I mean socio economic system) had perverted itself into something beyond Orwellian ideas (beyond maximizing profit - more like total control over population) . However , one can use old tech (whenever and wherever is possible) and there is an open source community , go fund me public campaigns and such...Of course , it is hard (or impossible) to start production of trains (open source , public ownership) , but many other things can be done that way. Also , I can bet (and I'm not a gambler) , that you can unleash some tech savvy people on the train hardware and software and they can reinvent the whole system and than you can order specified parts from China , Iran , Russia , Turkey , or wherever , which can produce those parts for a fraction of the cost. Where there is a will - there is a way. It will , probably , come naturally , when people , even they are conditioned (psychologically) to buy next new shiny thing , couldn't afford that new thing anymore (I mean in majority).
BTW , I'm typing this on a 15 years old lap top (and I have like almost four more of same for spares) and couple of milliseconds of latency doesn't bother me much.
