I came to the US as a Chinese student. The in-state tuition for public university is quite affordable. It is only expensive for international/out-of-state student who have to pay 2 or 3x higher rate (because their parents didn't pay taxes to fund the university). If you are a good students, especially in STEM fields, there are plenty of scholarships or teaching/research assistantships that can decrease the cost further. Like many said, education is an investment in yourself. I noticed many Americans foolishly because they should "follow their hearts", which is NOT the right way, as you are not buying a hobby. You should choose a degree with jobs that you don't hate but pays well.

Lots of US student were told "just follow your heart" since they were little, and they are the ones choosing to study low paying degrees. We Asians usually are taught to get a high paying job in STEM. My wife and I graduated with over $200k in student loan debt, but because our degrees pays so well, we paid it off in 3 years and got married, bought a house and 2 cars all during that time. Asian parents are harsh but taught us the right lessons in life. The general rule is that your total student loans amount should NOT be more than 1x your first year's salary post graduation.
