Europe has pretty much gone more and more socialist and less competitive. When you are demanding 32 hr work week and retire at 62 with big pensions, of course the economic output would not be as competitive and as a result have less money to invest in innovations. Of course, China's ultra-competitve 996 study/work culture is inhumane as well. But you put the two in competition, the one that work hard is going to beat the one laying back.

@icemike1 sure, and I want 10 million dollars with that retirement. Don't become socialist and expect others to pay for 30 hr week and retirement. USSR and China before it became capitalist are good examples why socialism just means other countries will eat your lunch.

@logician3641 not a sustainable system though. Aging population, lower productivity, but expect same or better benefits? Sorry, but there is no math in the universe where this could work.

Manufacturing can't make you a wealthy country, this is why the middle income trap exist. All rich countries off shore or automate most manufacturing and turn into service economies.

@logician3641 the same reason they though relying on Russian oil and gas was a good idea. Yeah, keep up those naive and short sighted policies, keep thinking everyone could just work less, retire earlier, with bigger pensions and everything will be fine.

@OnlineEnglish-wl5rp double that age and add couple of years. I'm actually a Chinese American. I came to study in the US and then immigrated. Even every chinese know that socialism doesn't work, because it just caused shared poverty instead of prosperity. Europe was able to enjoy social democratic precisely because USSA and China were practicing socialism back then and both were completely failing miserably. Now China is no longer practicing socialism, it is just as capitalistic as America. This is why Europe has been stagnating for the last 15 years. Go ahead, keep on the unsustainable and short sighted policies, keep on stagnating and falling behind.

@account-369 I know, because it can't be achieved, because I require humans to not be selfish, it's utopian and impossible. So any politician who is trying to sell you socialsim is probably really trying to be the next dictator, like Stalin, like Mao, like Pol Pot, Kim, Castro...on and on and on.
