‘Health care spending’ is increasing as demand for all kinds of ‘health’ issues increases, and the administrative/organisational spend is unchallenged and uncontrolled (in effect). This is especially true in Scotland (while by all indicators the health of the population is worsening) but across the board is seriously problematic Take an objective look at A &E on any night. Try to get a GP appointment that would easily avert a visit to hospital. GP ‘clinics’ have legions of gate-keepers and administrative folk who write referrals for the GPs that in most places would be done by a GP themselves aided by a basic IT system and would take 10-20 seconds!! The overlay of frankly daft procedures and useless administrative layers and bizarre policies (in some areas) is only possible as a result of over staffing and genuflecting to unrepresentative lobby groups. There is much that is great in the NHS but a clunking inefficient administrative machine is costly. Over staffing is costly and frustrating too. It is not universal, some staff are overworked while the makeworkers are everywhere. Lobby groups such as ‘Stonewall’ and similar are money sinks not just in the actual millions they cream off, but in their diversion of funds to silly useless policy making, and worse.
