Well....german tanks designs are quite old (Leo II is from the 80th although updated), Leclerc is younger (from the 90th, and updated), but both countries have several problem :
- Leo II production is small
- Leclerc production lines were closed in 2008, and it was a too expensive tank
- Leo II is outdated
- re-opening Leclerc production lines would be extremely expensive, and for a soon-to-be obsolete tank
So yeah, they both need a new tank. More Germany than France, since France has zero ennemy close to its borders, its own planes, and its own nukes. France only interest in tanks is for the prestige, and the industrial capability

@joelbilly1355 Nope, these small arms factories in France have been closed for decades. Small arms aren't that easy to sell in time of peace, and they are not especially good exportation products, compared to more expensive and complex artillery systems, planes, etc. France literally sacrified its small arms production for european products, but most European countries didn't do the same.
When I talk about European countries buying weapons, I'm not talking about small weapons, but all weapons. And most choose out of Europe solutions, like USA and South Korea.
"the us did not buy French weapons because they weren't a NATO member"
I don't know why you say such nonsense. France is literally a founding member of NATO, and has always been a member (just not in the integrated command for 4 decades). You should study history more honestly.

@dude861
Woah dude, you should read yourself.
Leclerc dominated other NATO tanks in every competition and joint training, and far above Leo II.
MBT-70, the eurofighter typhoon, the eurocopter tiger, the eurodrone, the MAWS, are failed due to Germany, not France.
SAMPT, FREMM, SCALP NG and other joint projects are working fine with France.

@anubis5397 Moreover, France as a country doesn't really need heavy MBT. There is no threat around. Actually, France would be more a threat to its neighbors than the opposite (in term of military power, ofc everyone around France is friendly now).
So yeah, I don't see France developping an expensive new tank on its own.
The only current "threat" would be Russia, but it is dying in Ukraine right now, and separated from France by an overpowered Poland, Germany, NATO, and France own nuclear nukes lmao. So, a new MBT for France seems to be useless at least for decades IMHO
