Ask again in summertime, when France has to shut down its nuclear power plants and has to import energy from Germany (also a net exporter).

Well, look at Hickley PointC. Started building 2016, expected to be finished in 2026. Costs 27bn Euro. For that money, you can build the whole infrastructure to store surplus energy from renewables in hydrogen.

France would run out of power in the summertime, because they have to shut down their nuclear power plants and import electricity from Germany (also a net energy exporter). The reason they have to shut down is due to overheating of the cooling water taken from rivers.

@mankeil4468 nuclear plants are getting cooled by water from rivers. If the water temperature is too warm, it can not be used anymore.

@notliquid1448 it is still more efficient to use it than to let excess electricity go to waste

@Johan Wittens and why would hydrogen storage age?

@Johan Wittens why would there being any CO2 involved if the energy source are renewables? And hydrogen can not only be used for electricity, but heating, chemical reactions. The issue of nuclear power (political problems aside): 1. it is by far the most expensive source of energy (comparing costs of Hickley Point C to the cost of wind/solar…) 2. it literally takes decades to build 3. it is a very slow energy source in terms of adjusting output 4. no insurance in the world covers you 5. mining uranium is the worst of all 6. long term storage of waste still not solved.

@factnotfiction5915 well, Asia (I suppose you mean China). You want to employ similar tactics here? Easy: Cut wages by 75-80% Workers protection laws and its enforcement are optional No regards for the environment If your house is in the way, well, bad for you. Compensation is also optional
