@Enoch916 There is an interesting debate going on in the EU concerning the development of future aircraft's: for them to be allowed to carry US nukes, the USA demands full disclosure of the blueprints. So discussions arise for the German military, to keep its nuclear capabilities while not giving the US technology secrets for free, to switch to French nukes instead. There are no plans to replace NATO in the EU, just to gain more independence on military aspects from the US. This goes hand in hand with increased military budgets, as demanded by the US, but I suspect the US expectations were that the EU would spend this on US military equipment, not using it to develop its own capabilities.

@froJoss Turkey is an interesting case study. Its economy is currently suffering enormously (50% value loss of the Lira compared to the US Dollar), and it is dependent on membership of the EU custom`s union. So the EU has the tools to completely crush Turkey if they like (but this would be a move of last resort). Just a couple of days ago Turkey`s finance minister (and Erdogans son in law) resigned. Erdogan himself is losing support of the people. On the military front, Turkey just lost against Russia (again) in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. It is losing foreign influence, as it is seen as an aggressor by its neighbors.

@Enoch916 It was agreed that the members of NATO move towards the 2% by 2024. Lots of wiggle room.

If even the UK government says that in parliament, I do not understand why not just call the international treaty breaking internal market bill...
