  1. The center of power inside the EU is the council. The member nations have almost no interest in giving any to EU bodies, which left the parliament rather toothless (it is getting better). The UK in particularity understood how to steer the EU in their interest (single market, extension with eastern european nations...) and had several allies (Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden...). They often shared interests with Germany, too, against France. I do not understand how you can throw such power and influence away for nothing.

  4. Both Canada and Australia have huge natural resources and therefor a different type of economy than the UK. As you mentioned, they are not alone, but have trade agreements with their closest neighbors. NZ has a lower GDP per capita than the UK. Australia, Canada and NZ are all members of TPP, a proto version of the EU.
