  2.  @josephkhardin4532  According to may sources: unlike almost any other country in Europe, lorry drivers in the UK have no access to toilets or showers, while truck stops take a fee for parking. How much money would you want for having to piss in a bottle for a whole week?

  5. Tanker drivers are highly regulated. They need special certification, experience, and are not allowed to drive more than a certain amount of hours each week. They will gladly take the money, but not a liter more will be delivered.

  7.  @mikebetts2046  Well, we can go through the UK bottlenecks step by step. 1 bottleneck: available people. The UK has more job offerings than unemployed. And not all unemployed are suitable to any job. Other jobs (hospitality, delivery driver) pay more, have better work life balance, do not require (as) expensive licenses (HGV license costs several 1000 pounds, which unemployed usually have not to spend) and do not require you to piss in a bottle for a week due to a lack of toilets. 2. training: UK has a lack of personal to train HGV drivers and test them. They also now want to strike because the government: wants to increase their workload; doesnt want to pay more

  8.  @mrsmerily  There is a difference between shortages (EU) and critical shortages (UK). The former is having less than optimal, the later is having to few to deliver what is required. The electricity and gas prices in the UK risen by a bigger percentage than in the EU, due to Brexit. Or look at gas prices, 200% in the EU, 400% in the UK. This extra increase is the Brexit dividend. Furthermore, Brexit also decreased productivity of drivers due to the loss of cabotage. While pre Brexit, a lorry driver would have delivered goods from Rotterdam to London, taking new goods and driving to Manchester, while than traveling back from Manchester to Brussels, now only 2 trips instead of 3 are allowed. And due to the EU border checks (UK has postponed theirs again...), the last trip may be skipped, too, so only 1 delivery instead of three.

  10. Switzerland has freedom of movement, too. They have the highest wages in Europe and the world. Why can they do that while the UK fails? Maybe it has nothing to do with FOM, but with UK politics?

  13.  @inkydoug  I expect self driving trucks in 5-10 years. Which brings another question: why should anyone train and pay to become a driver today, if the job perspective is to be replaced by a computer soon? So the UK just has to wait a couple of years for fuel.
