Comments by "Neodym" (@neodym5809) on "Brexit: 'Major consequences' over NI protocol being breached by the UK" video.
Because the UK is not able to kick back. The EU currently fully checks UK imports (including SPS checks). The UK does not check ANY EU imports. Why? Because they neither have the staff nor facilities to do so, and depend on EU imports for everything, including food and medicine. Furthermore, as UK ports are completely overwhelmed, even non EU trade is processed in EU ports and send to the UK. So if the UK would retaliate the same way, it would starve itself.

@rogergregory5981 The Northern Ireland protocol is no trade agreement.

@deehaytch8442 To safeguard the protocol. If parts of the protocol are causing serious harm, they can be suspended temporarily until it is worked out. But first, everything else has to be tried, and the protocol has to stay. Article 16 does NOT allow to rip up the protocol.

Germany would close their car plants in the UK (Mini, RR, Bentley) and France would close their UK car plants (Vauxhall, Nissan).

The UK is not checking EU imports. The EU is checking UK imports. Why? Because the UK is not capable of doing so, it lacks both the staff and facilities. Therefor, no, the UK is not able to put tariffs on EU goods.

Wrong. If one side triggers article 16, the other side is allowed to put counter measures in place.

@asanulsterman1025 in what market? Northern Ireland can export both to Britain and the EU without any barriers.
2
WTO means the UK has to put up a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The UK relies on EU food, without it, it starves. It can not even import from elsewhere because its ports are too small.

@djjazz1388 the UK was the sick man of Europe before it joined, it was literally broke.

NI wants the protocol to stay, because it gives them a major economic advantage.

@mikewhitby2686 WTO MFN demand every import to be treated the same. If there is no border in Ireland, EU imports are treated differently, as without checks, than imports from other countries. Breach of WTO.

@misterlimey6408 Yes. Welcome to the real world. UK small. EU big. Big decides, small follows. Ask Canada how they are treated by the US.
1
@propodkinsbro7224 nuclear power? The Uk needs to ask the US before it can use its nukes.
1
@lilbrit1019 give one example where a smaller nation pressured a bigger one to get what it wanted in a trade deal.

@douglastodd1947 The UK gave NI to the EU. Negotiated by Frost, agreed by Johnson, voted by parliament, signed by the queen.

Combine the GDP of Canada, NZ and Australia, and it almost comes close to Germany...
