  1. That's the norm in most other First World countries, and it's not uncommon here, depending on the charge and circumstances. After the (pretty long, just think about it) sentence, the prisoner is evaluated to see if they're still dangerous, and then the sentence can be lengthened if necessary. It serves no purpose to have a bunch of elderly inmates dying in prison.
