@barberman2737 You don't know what you're talking about. For one thing, some countries have free passage between them- most of the EU, for example. For another, they aren't "just staying." They're asking for asylum, and being processed. For another, "stay and fix their own country" is the kind of thing that people said to some of my ancestors, and probably some of yours as well. It's even worse when US foreign policy, trade policy, etc. are a big part of what causes people to flee in the first place. Migration is a boon, not a burden, which is why expediting the work permits is so important. Also: *its.

Sure, so let's make adequate numbers of visas available for lower-skilled workers, and streamline the asylum process. Also, if you know anything about US Foreign Policy, trade policy, etc., you will understand that people come here because the US goes there.

Under Biden, people die in the desert. Under Trump/Abbott/etc., they die in the river, on wire, via bullets, etc. Either way, it's atrocious. You might have to seek asylum someday too. That, and if there were enough visas available for lower-skilled workers, this would be a very small problem.

@mikepattaya6769 Asking for asylum is legal. There are almost no visas these days for lower-skilled workers. If more were available, that would make the issue much, much smaller. At the moment, it's not entirely the point, since this is a situation of large-scale asylum-seeking. As for the more-skilled people you mention, I agree, that should be expedited as well. The problem is that the people who get most upset about the current state of affairs also don't seem interested in making adequate visas available, and other reforms. Why might that be? Also, you might have to seek asylum yourself someday.

@davemurray2880 The US doesn't give money to every place in the world every year. Foreign aid is a tiny part of the budget (Americans usually estimate that it's about ten times larger than it actually is). Meanwhile, US foreign policy, bogus neoliberal trade agreements, and the like cause a lot more damage. In the 1970s in the UK, the graffiti "We came here because you go/went there" appeared in response to anti-migrant sentiment.

@eihthype6578 No. I'm referring in that case to the matter of migration in normal times, outside of the current asylum crisis. Before this started, most undocumented migrants were laborers of one form or another. If they could get adequate numbers of visas, then illegal immigration would barely exist. Very few such visas are available these days. There is no "line" to get in.

@Arguingwiththedog I know. For one thing, seeking asylum is legal, and one can legally ask from within the United States. For another, there's no reason that the current system has to move at its snail's pace. This is by design, to make it as difficult as possible for those seeking asylum/refuge, or if not by design, due to a lack of humane priorities and concern. The great thing is that economists are nearly united in saying that migration is a boon, not a burden. Expedite the work visas.

@eihthype6578 Yes. The process of asylum takes a very long time to complete. The court proceedings are also designed to be needlessly difficult. The US is not 300 trillion dollars in debt; that's closer to the entire world's figure. Besides, debt is not the deficit, those are two very different things, and the humanitarian measures given to asylum seekers are a lot less expensive than the consequences of doing nothing (which is against international law, not to mention human decency). Migration is a boon (like none other), not a burden, so long as people are able to work, hence the drive to make work permits available sooner.

@lesmoore3638 Debit cards aren't credit cards, and non-citizens are not getting voter registration forms. These humanitarian measures are to prevent even more of a humanitarian crisis. Just because your ancestors didn't get something, why do you have a problem with someone else getting it? What is this psychology that wants to prevent something good (even, or perhaps especially, life-saving measures) from happening to someone else?

Another is that they are simply unable (lack of resources, the apathy and callousness of their so-called guides, etc.) to make the detours needed to get to one of the border crossings. It's beside the point. It's legal to apply for asylum from within the US.

@lesmoore3638 It's actually legal to ask for asylum from within the US, and the international treaties on asylum don't require anything like stopping at any particular country. Are you suggesting containing asylum seekers in some kind of camp? Note that a large majority of asylum seekers attend their court dates.
