  5. What point, exactly? The rates of most kinds of crime are far below their early-90s (or thereabouts) peaks.

  6.  @jonnyfendi2003  The point is that "the point we're at as a society" (referencing the initial comment) is not that bad, all things considered. It was once a lot worse. There's no need for the culture of fear, nor the narrative of decline.

  9. New Orleans, like a lot of places, has a serious history of lead poisoning (or just lead exposure). It's in paint and other parts of substandard housing. In fact, a lot of it is in the soil there, although less so after Katrina. Lead exposure in childhood leads to lowered IQs and greatly diminished impulse control. It's a major cause of crime and antisocial behavior like this, and getting the lead out is one of the best investments possible regarding public health and safety.
