  1. The Soviets took Berlin and finished off the Nazis. The Nazi regime was of course based on anti-communism (along with crackpot racism), and communists had done a lot of resisting. Add all of this together, and the Soviets had a certain prestige, politically (although not on a personal level, considering how many rapes they committed after the fall of the Nazis).
