However, when people need to flee for their lives ASAP, that won't help!

That's in spite of how many hurdles are placed in the path of people who are trying to save their lives. Being open to asylum is part of international law, treaties to which the US is a party. Yes, I know what I'm arguing, and I was born here.

  46.  @alexwalker5645  Your numbers are much too low, and again, there's nothing illegal about asking for asylum. The other countries that they often pass through are often afflicted by the same problems (murderous gangs attempting to conscript children, rightist death-squad regimes that the US supports, etc.). Note, however, that some asylum seekers do stop well short of the US border. (Also, why were the rules different for Cubans for so long?) You might have to seek asylum yourself someday. By the way, no, the economics do help the average American, and the benefits would be much larger if the process were more streamlined. In other words, expedite the work permits. Economists across the spectrum are almost entirely in agreement that migration is a boon, not a burden. In fact, it's one of the strongest poverty-fighting mechanisms possible, and it should be as free as possible.
