@The_Last_Mariachi That's not true. There is no legal requirement to arrive at a port of entry in order to ask for asylum. One can do that from within the US. Sometimes going to the drastic measures you mentioned is the only viable option.

@The_Last_Mariachi There is no "first safe country" rule. That's another common misconception. People wouldn't request asylum if they didn't want it. By the way, looking for work is a good thing. Migration is a stimulus, a boon not a burden, according to economists across the political spectrum. Don't fall into the "lump of labor" fallacy. There's not a fixed amount of work for people to do. Job totals are elastic, not inelastic. This is why work permits for the asylum-seekers should be expedited. Note also that (leaving the question of asylum/refuge aside) there are almost no visas available for lower-skilled workers. There is no "line" to get in.
