It is headed back down after an upswing. I'm glad that they mentioned that in this video. Lurid news stories are the primary reason why Americans always think that crime is worse than it actually is.

That's not true at all. Migrants, no matter their status, commit less crime than US-born citizens. Also, NYC is pretty safe these days, as are most parts of DC and Chicago.

What's that supposed to mean? Juvenile crime in the US peaked (as did most categories of crime) around 1990, and it's much lower now. Lurid news stories give the wrong impression. The Great Crime Rise and Great Crime Decline track perfectly with the rise & fall of leaded gasoline. Kevin Drum at Mother Jones has done great work on this subject, as have others. Also, to get right to your implied point, there's a debate about the degree to which Roe v. Wade contributed to the 1990s crime decline. Unwanted children are more likely to commit crimes.

@Centurion305 Some reservations can be pretty dangerous. Search for "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women," or words to that effect.

The Obama years saw crime bottom out; for a while the homicide rate was at a 100-year low. The recent upswing in crime began under Trump, and now it's calming down, no matter what lurid news reporting makes you think.

New York is quite safe these days. In fact, that's true for most of DC and Chicago. The highest per-capita homicide rates are in rural areas.

@ctgal9698 Unless one hates suburbs, of course.

That would mean that the driver would have been unable to find safety in this country.

@michaels5222 Embryos aren't children. There's no harm in not being born. If there's any correlation between legality/availability of abortion and crime, it's the opposite of what you claim. There's a debate about whether or not Roe V. Wade contributed to the Great Crime Decline that began in the 1990s and is mostly still with us. The removal of lead from gasoline played a much larger role, but it's interesting all the same.
