There are almost no visas available for lower-skilled workers. If there were, this situation largely would not exist.

@RenegadeElite101 It isn't close to enough. The consequences would be dire, even calamitous, if every state imposed laws like this before there was any federal reform.

@yossarian_lives That's an oversimplification. The demand for the jobs, even if wages were as high as what the market could bear, simply isn't sufficiently available in the US. Capitalists won't let wages get that high in any case. Also, the border isn't close to being open, but if it was, the economic benefits would be off-the-charts. Adding links tends to make comments disappear, but you can look up what The Economist has published on the topic.

@warrenlewis3977 Some jobs in construction involve a lot of specialized training, certification, and whatnot, but others don't. Besides, and more importantly, the focus of this report is largely on agriculture. There is no such thing as unskilled labor, to be sure.

@meyou4923 Why not let the market sort out the situation?

@albertoiportillocaballero3163 It's easy to look into and look up.

@ronsirman6867 I don't know what "False it #" means.
1
@conver-say-tionchannel6805 That's completely untrue. There's no evidence to support that, which is part of the reason why economists across the spectrum want to see as much migration as possible.

@randydeutscherii3623 Among other things, those are only temporary.

@williamvorkosigan5151 You're putting words in my mouth. Unfortunately, the people who get the angriest about this situation are the same people who are uninterested, and often downright hostile, to the idea of issuing adequate visas. I don't want this exploitative situation to continue, obviously. I want to see the freest possible movement of people, with the market sorting it out, as (besides the matter of human rights) the economic benefits would be stupendous. Economists across the political spectrum usually agree on this.

@williamvorkosigan5151 Here it is. People said the same thing about my ancestors, along with so many others, and the odds are good that they said it about yours as well. It was wrong then, and it's wrong now.

@williamvorkosigan5151 Which statistics?

@williamvorkosigan5151 "Pseudo Mexico..." "Those [Irish/Italians/Jews/Chinese/etc.] are taking over!"
1
@lilliankinsman1153 Large-scale farming is labor-intensive, and temporary, guest-worker visas are too few in number and very inefficient anyway.
1
@alij9888 It doesn't require intensive training and certification. There's no such thing as unskilled labor, to be sure.
1
@vastmethod2006 There's no evidence for that.
1
@spikefivefivefive That's the point. They can't get said visas, but life finds a way.
1
@robertwilber1909 I think that it's pretty obvious.
