See the trajectory of the party since 1980. They think, quite literally and genuinely, that they are on a mission from God. They say it themselves. In a case like that, anything else can go out the window.

@weezem Once again: Several of the attackers were caught with firearms, and who knows how many weren't caught. More firearms were stashed nearby, along with explosives. Some of the attackers had blades, quite a few had chemical sprays, some used tasers/stun guns, and of course they had hundreds/thousands of blunt instruments. They came within a few yards and a few moments of lynching lawmakers, preventing certification of the election, and causing a constitutional crisis. The attack was premeditated, and it was the culmination of a months-long effort to overturn an election that Trump admitted to losing. We've seen a veritable avalanche of evidence, most of it from administration insiders. It's not in dispute.
