  1.  @MrCat-se7ws  No they weren't. The Democrats were more right-leaning back then, compared to the GOP. Keep in mind, though, that for a very long time there were both conservative and liberal Democrats, and conservative and liberal Republicans.

Of course, regarding your second sentence, keep in mind that the Democrats, like the Republicans, are still a neoliberal capitalist/imperialist party, so not all that leftist! Maybe the new progressives can change that, but I am not holding my breath.

  5.  @Aqua.man045  No, it's not disputed among historians. There was a substantial political realignment after JFK/LBJ, the Voting Rights Act, the Southern Strategy, etc.
