It was a quick trial, just to make sure that the new government did their due diligence and everything was by-the-book. After that, those two were lined up against a wall and shot, and then Romania abolished the death penalty. The Total Fertility Rate (births-per-woman, which is different from the birth rate, but that's off the subject) leapt up after the law was put in place, hence the notorious orphanages, but it came back down after a few years, as people found ways to get around it. Still, the situation was a mess. Have you ever seen the movie "4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days"? If you forget the title, search for "Romanian abortion movie." It's set in the 80s, when the regime was still in power (albeit in trouble), and it is riveting, about the quest for an illegal abortion, and the need to conceal it. Watch it!

  3. Rape exceptions make it clear- it's about sex. They want to punish people for having sex; see all the language about "consequences." To be fair, some anti-choicers are honest enough to oppose rape exceptions; at least they're consistent.
