This was due to the misallocation of resources from the Federal Reserve's inflationary monetary policy and artificially low interest rates. Prices natural decrease over time in a free market, but if the central bank is artificially inflating the cost of living, businesses unnaturally will create products that are designed to be bought multiple times as a way to pass on the increased costs to the consumer. This isn't the failure of capitalism, this is the failure of central bank policy.
