  4. The point of a military is to apply violence at selected positions at a time of choice, in support of a nation's national objective(s). Large militaries tend to be cumbersome, reducing flexibility and response time. Command and control are also impacted. An efficient military needs to be only so large as to be able to meet the nation's needs, whilst retaining a reserve to both fill in for casualties, and deter second and third parties from getting adventurous. 'Human wave' militaries ceased being effective after the Korean War (and were arguably ineffective even then, as the Chinese learned to their bloody dismay).

  5. HIMARS is living up to the hype, and then some. Fucking lethal, and a complete game-changer. The Orcs can still supply, but it must come from much further away, screwing up their logistics and resupply timelines. Not to mention, exposing their supply chain to that lethal Ukrainian tube artillery.

  14. This presupposes an effective Reserve formation or an extremely efficient conscription and training system. Modern war is (potentially) much too fast to allow traditional mobilization of the population. Ukraine benefitted from an incompetent Russian military. Had they faced a well-drilled, well-led enemy - even with Russia's crap hardware - we'd be looking at a post-independent Ukraine. As it was, the emergency arming of the population, whilst (just barely) adequate, led to enormous casualties amongst the volunteers.

  15.  @warhorse03826  in effect, they did, upon invasion, opening the armories to anyone who showed up. Ad-hoc arming of the citizenry though, does not an effective Reserve make. When Russia invaded, it was years too late to go 'Swiss.' Recall that all Swiss Reserves are trained, are required to stay in practice, and are subject to periodic refresher training. Undoubtedly, had Ukraine possessed such a system, it would have been extremely helpful, but that's wishful thinking and water under the bridge.

  23.  @Roon3808  foam is used to blanket the fuel source, cutting it off from oxygen. Bouncing it off the side of a tank is going to do VERY little good. Roughly speaking in a situation like this, if you're dropping the foam directly on the flames, you're doing something useful. Spraying the side of the tank isn't that.

  24. Russia is burning their future in this, Putin's War. Their young, the best and brightest, and being destroyed. These young men could be mechanics, plumbers, businessman, engineers, nurses, doctors, teachers... Instead, they're a net drain on Russian society, unable to contribute, or just simply being dead. It'll be a generation or more before Russia even begins to recover from the brain and labor waste.

  29. When talking military budgets, recall that they do not include a lot of elements that other militaries include, like healthcare. The Russians put that spend under other departments.

  42. When Germany inked a deal for huge volumes of cheap energy from Russia, they signed a deal with the devil. They should have known better, but there you are. Until Germany acknowledges just how compromised they are, they will try to soft-pedal their complicity in Russia's reign of terror. It's hard for an addict to blame their pusher or themselves.

  43. Watching the infantry dismount, they seem to have their act together. A little too bunched up for my comfort, but they're establishing flank security, and the NCOs are heads-up and directing their troops, rather than getting caught up in the fighting. Well done!
